Baseball Defeats Dickinson, 14-10, in Game One of Saturday's Doubleheader

CARLISLE, Pa. – The Franklin & Marshall baseball team (18-14-1, 5-8-1 CC) won one of its two games against Dickinson (19-14-1, 5-8-1 CC) in Saturday's Centennial Conference doubleheader. The Diplomats won game one, 14-10, before the second game resulted in a 13-13 tie due to darkness.

Game 1: Franklin & Marshall 14, Dickinson 10
A nine-run second inning put Dickinson ahead early. However, the Diplomats climbed all the way back with nine-consecutive runs, including a five-run fifth inning to tie the contest at 9-9. F&M scored two runs in the sixth and three runs in the ninth to slip past the Red Devils for a 14-10 win in game one.

The Diplomats broke into the scoring column first in the top of the first inning. Michael von Zuben led off the frame with a walk, followed by Owen Woodward getting hit by a pitch. A single from Matt Hollender brought von Zuben home for the first run of the game.

In the top of the second, Nick DiGiacomo reached on an error and advanced to second to start the inning. The next batter, Landon Hallett ripped a single into center field to plate DiGiacomo to give F&M a 2-0 advantage.

Dickinson scored nine runs in the bottom of the second to take a 9-2 lead, but F&M went right back to work in the top of the third. Tanner Wolpert reached base on an error and immediately advanced to second. Hollender capitalized on the opportunity by lacing a double into left center field to score Wolpert and reduce the deficit to six. The Diplomats continued its comeback in the top of the fourth as Hallett doubled and Ethan Conklin singled to put runners at the corners. A single from Woodward brought home Hallett to trim Dickinson's lead to 9-4.

In the top of the fifth, F&M rallied with two outs in the frame. DiGiacomo and Hallett both worked walks, followed by a single from Conklin to load the bases. Von Zuben cleared the bases on the next at-bat, bringing home three runs on a single to get F&M within two of tying. The next batter, Woodward raced around the bases on two errors from the Dickinson infield to score two runs and tie the game at 9-9.

Franklin & Marshall regained the lead in the sixth as Gideon Schwartz blasted a lead-off home run over the left field fence to give the Diplomats a 10-9 advantage. Two batters later, DiGiacomo sent his third home run of the season over the left center field wall to give the visitors a two-run cushion.

Dickinson plated a run in the bottom of the eighth to get within a run of tying the game. However, F&M added insurance in the top of the ninth. Von Zuben led off the inning hitting his first-career home run over the left field wall to give F&M a 12-10 lead. Hollender continued in the inning with a two-out infield single. That set up Schwartz to hit his second home run of the game and his third home run of the year to grow the F&M lead to 14-10.

Seven Diplomats recorded multi-hit performances, highlighted by Hollender tallying four hits in the win. Von Zuben led F&M with four RBI, while Schwartz ended the game with three. As a team, the Diplomats recorded seven extra-base hits in the victory. F&M also hit four home runs, which is one shy of tying the program's single-game record.

David McGeorge (4-2) earned his fourth win of the season, striking out seven batters in 5.0 innings of work. Chris Keating notched his second save of the year as he struck out two and allowed just one hit and no runs in 1.2 innings of work. Luca Marshall also pitched well out of the bullpen, tossing three strikeouts and allowing one earned run in 2.1 innings of relief.

Game 2: Franklin & Marshall 13, Dickinson 13 (6 Innings – Game called due to darkness)
Franklin & Marshall chipped away at an early eight-run deficit, tying the game in the top of the third. Dickinson added three runs in the bottom of the third frame, but F&M responded with four runs across the next two innings to hold a 13-12 advantage. The Red Devils brought the game to a 13-13 tie as the game was called due to darkness after six innings of play.

Saturday's tie is the first draw for F&M since 2018 where the Diplomats tied Ursinus, 6-6, in a 14-inning battle.

The Diplomats started fast with von Zuben earning a walk and Woodward slashing a single to start game two. Two batters later, Hollender singled to right field, driving in von Zuben to put the Diplomats ahead, 1-0.

In the bottom of the first, Dickinson scored nine runs on seven hits to take a 9-1 advantage in the contest. F&M began to chip away in the top of the second with the Diplomats loading the bases with one out. Wolpert capitalized on the opportunity by lacing a triple into right center field to drive in three and cut the deficit to 9-4. A sacrifice fly from Hollender allowed Wolpert to come home to get F&M within four.

Franklin & Marshall continued to apply pressure in the top of the third as the visitors got two runners into scoring position with no outs. Von Zuben ripped a single up the middle of the infield to score both runners, getting the Diplomats within two of tying the game. F&M worked the bases loaded again as a double play allowed another run to come into score. An error on the Dickinson infield allowed the game-tying run to score to wrap up the frame.

The Red Devils regained the lead in the bottom of the third, scoring three runs to take a 12-9 advantage. F&M came right back in the top of the fourth as an RBI-double from Conklin and an RBI-sacrifice fly from von Zuben got the Diplomats within a run of tying the game.

The Diplomats' final push came in the top of the fifth as Hollender singled and Schwartz doubled to get two runners into scoring position with one out. Nick Lorenzo ripped a single through the left side of the infield to score both runners to give the Diplomats a 13-12 lead.

Dickinson tied the game up with a run in the bottom of the fifth. The game was then called due to darkness following the sixth inning.

Von Zuben led the Diplomats with three hits, while Hollender and Wolpert recorded two hits each. Von Zuben and Wolpert also tied each with a team-high three RBI each.

Colin Mackenzie started the game on the mound, allowing six runs in his 10th outing of the season.
