GETTYSBURG, PA -- Franklin & Marshall goalie Ed Stelz (So., Kew Gardens, NY/Loomis Chaffee) made 13 saves, including four stops in overtime, as the Diplomats played to a 1-1 double overtime tie at Gettysburg College in Centennial Conference men's soccer action.
The game was a battle of halves as Gettysburg outshot F&M 12-4 in the first half and carried a 1-0 lead into halftime as Mike Leader fed Chris Borcik for a goal at the 10:31 mark.
Franklin & Marshall then took command of the contest outshooting the Bullets 11-7 the rest of the way, including a dominating 6-1 advantage in shots during the second half, to hold on for the tie.
Trailing 1-0, the Diplomats knotted the game at the 75:57 mark as Brandon Corday (Fr., Morton Grove, IL/Niles Township) lofted a cross to Mike Boyd (So., Naples, FL/Barron Collier) who buried the shot past Gettysburg goalie Nick Wells-Bundtzen.
Neither team could score the rest of the way as Stelz nor Wells-Bundtzen allowed a goal for the 1-1 tie.
The Bullets had a chance to put the game away in the first half as Garrett Bruno and Borcik fired shots that deflected off the goal post at 5:45 and 17:33, respectively, to keep the game within striking distance for Franklin & Marshall.
In the second overtime period, the Bullets attempted to turn up the pressure out-shooting F&M 3-2, but Stelz made two saves and a scoring try by Bruno sailed high over the goal
The game marks the fourth tie or one goal match between the Diplomats and Bullets as Gettysburg scored in the last minute of play for a 2-1 win at F&M in 2003. In 2002, Franklin & Marshall knocked off Gettysburg 2-1 in double overtime during the regular season before dropping the Bullets in penalty shots as part of a 1-1 (4-3 PK) double overtime win over Gettysburg in the Centennial Conference semifinals at Johns Hopkins University.
The tie also keeps the series record tied for another year as Franklin & Marshall is 33-33-4 through 70 meetings against the Bullets since the two teams first met in 1930.
Franklin & Marshall College (5-3-2, 2-2-1 CC) will continue the season at 4:30 p.m. on October 13 at home versus Lebanon Valley College in the first of a three game home stand against the Flying Dutchmen, Ursinus (October 16) and Hood (October 19).
