LANCASTER, PA -- Pitcher Ted Serro (So., Brooklyn, NY/Xavier) allowed one hit and a walk while striking out four batters over seven innings in a 2-0 victory for the Franklin & Marshall College baseball team to complete a Centennial Conference doubleheader sweep of the Washington College Shoremen.
In game one, the Shoremen cracked the scoring column first in the top of the second inning when third basemen Mike Parton led the inning off with a single and came across the plate on a Paul Franklin RBI single.
The Diplomats answered in the bottom of the inning as Gary Kruger (So., East Islip, NY/East Islip) led the inning off with a walk. Two batters later Corey Caruthers (So., Conestoga, PA/Penn Manor) reached first on an error by the first basemen before Dan Hanecak (So., Conestoga, PA/Lancaster Catholic) moved both runners ninety feet closer with a ground out to second base. Eric Milavsky (So., Medford, NJ/Shawnee) drove both runners in on a two run double to give F&M a 2-1 lead. The Diplomats tacked on eight more runs over the next four innings for a 10-1 victory.
On the mound, John Walsh (Sr., Havertown, PA/Haverford) went five innings allowing one run on four hits and three walks while striking out six batters. Jeremy Knox (So., Bronx, NY/Iona Prep) threw the final two innings allowing on walk with two strikeouts.
At the plate, Gordie Eck (Sr., Columbia, PA/Lancaster Catholic) went three-for-three while Dan Weber (Sr., Reading, PA/Governor Mifflin), Chris Smith (So., Fairfax Station, VA/Robinson) and Milavsky were all two-for-three.
Game two was a pitching dual between Serro and Washington's Shawn Hampt as both pitchers had there way until F&M jumped on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Weber reached first on a one out error at first base and moved to third on a single by Kruger. Following a steal of second base by Kruger, Scott Haft (Jr., Jupiter, FL/Jupiter) scored Weber on a ground out to second base before Caruthers drove a two out single up the middle to plate Kruger and give the Diplomats a 2-0 lead.
That is all the scoring Serro would need as he used a double play and a strike out in the top of the seventh inning to pick up his third win of the season.
At the plate, Kruger went two-for-three with a run scored and a stolen base to key the team to the win.
Franklin & Marshall (14-8, 6-1 CC) will return to action on April 6th at Gettysburg College. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
