Blue Devils: Wilson Scores Twice as Diplomats Double-Up Dickinson 2-1 in Men's Soccer

Box Score

LANCASTER, PA - Ben Wilson (Sr., Lititz, PA/Lititz Christian) scored twice, including his Centennial Conference best fifth game-winning goal of the season, as the Franklin & Marshall men's soccer team extinguished the Dickinson College Red Devils 2-1 at Baker Field in Centennial Conference action.

The Diplomats took the lead 13:04 into the game as David Steiner (Fr., Chappaqua, NY/Horace Greeley) assisted Wilson on a goal past Dickinson goalie Rodrigo Barboza. Eighteen minutes later, Wilson connected on an assist from defender Dave Heller (Sr., Somers, NY/North Salem) at the 31:42 mark for the game-winning goal and a 2-0 F&M lead at halftime.

Dickinson attempted to rally in the second half as Gregg Freeburn finished a loose ball inside the box at the 62:56 mark, but Heller and the Diplomats defense shut down the Red Devils' firepower down the stretch as goalie Ed Stelz (Jr., Kew Gardens, NY/Loomis Chaffee) recorded four second half saves.

Stelz finished the game with five saves on eight Dickinson shots to earn his eighth win of the season, while Barboza stopped three of F&M's eight shots to take the loss.

With the win, F&M (8-4-3, 5-3 CC) keeps its playoff hopes alive as the Diplomats are tied with Johns Hopkins University (10-2-4, 4-1-3 CC), Gettysburg College (7-4-4, 4-1-3 CC) and Muhlenberg (10-5, 5-3 CC) in the playoff hunt with three of the four teams advancing to the five team postseason tournament.

Overall, F&M holds a tiebreaker with Muhlenberg as the Diplomats downed the Mules 3-0 in Allentown on September 28, but fell to Swarthmore 1-0 in Lancaster on October 1 and 2-0 to Gettysburg on October 9 in Lancaster. Franklin & Marshall will conclude the regular season on October 29 at Johns Hopkins in a do-or-die game for both teams.

The victory marked the sixth straight for the Diplomats in the programs series as Franklin & Marshall improves to 33-16-5 all-time against the Red Devils.

Franklin & Marshall will continue the season on October 29 at Johns Hopkins in the final regular season match of the 2005 season. Match time is set for 7:00 p.m.
