Diplomats Down Ursinus 9-5 in Baseball

LANCASTER, PA - Catcher Stephen Frederick (Jr., Downingtown, PA/Downingtown) went two-for-two with three stolen base, while pinch hitter Dan Hanecak (Jr., Conestoga, PA/Lancaster Catholic) hit a three run double in the seventh inning to lead the Franklin & Marshall baseball team to a 9-5 Centennial Conference win over Ursinus College at Caplan Field.

The Diplomats jumped on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third inning as Frederick reached first on a one out walk then stole second base. Tommy Miller (Fr., York, PA/Central York) drove Frederick in with a single for a 1-0 lead and scored one batter later as Pat O'Reilly (Fr., Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) connected on a one hit single for a 2-0 lead.

Franklin & Marshall tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning as Gary Kruger (Jr., East Islip, NY/East Islip) and Corey Caruthers (Jr., Conestoga, PA/Penn Manor) started the inning off with back to back walks. Kruger scored on a single by Eric Milavsky (Jr., Medford, NJ/Shawnee) and Caruthers came in courtesy an RBI groundout by Rich Gallugi (Fr., Peabody, MA/Peabody). After Frederick and Miller walked, O'Reilly drove in Milavsky and Frederick with a two out single for a 6-0 lead.

Ursinus cut the lead in half in the top of the sixth inning as Brett Jenkins hit a three run double. The Bears added two more runs in the top of the seventh to cut F&M's lead to 6-5.

In the bottom of the seventh, O'Reilly and Rob Stern (Fr., Franklin Lakes, NJ/Indian Hills) reached on back-to-back singles before Kruger walked to load the bases. Hanecak then stepped in the box with one out and drove a 2-1 pitch to the left-center fence to plate three runs and give the Diplomats a 9-5 win.

On the mound, starting pitcher Jeff Rowand (So., York, PA/Dallastown) went six and two third innings allowing five runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts and two walks to earn his third victory of the season. Reliever Dan Tischler (Fr., New York, NY/Horace Mann) pitched an inning and a third to earn his first collegiate save.

Franklin & Marshall (7-10, 1-1 Centennial Conference) will continue the season on April 2 in Chestertown, Maryland versus Centennial Conference foe Washington College in a doubleheader. Opening pitch of game one is set for 11:30 a.m.
