Box Score LANCASTER, PA - The Franklin & Marshall College men's soccer team out shot Cabrini College 17-4, but the Cavaliers' Joe Rotan found the back of the net with 55.8 seconds remaining in regulation to knot the game at 1-1 as the teams played to a 1-1 tie in double overtime in the season opener for both teams.
Franklin & Marshall took the lead with 33:21 left in the first half as Chris Walters (So., Winslow, ME/Winslow) finished a cross from Brandon Corday (So., Morton Grove, IL/Niles Township) for a 1-0 lead. Neither team found the back of the net again prior to halftime as the Diplomats out shot the Cavaliers 6-3 in the first 45 minutes of play.
F&M held onto the lead until the final minute of play as Rotan flicked a loose ball into the corner of the goal to knot the score and force overtime.
In overtime, the Diplomats fired off three shots on goal while holding Cabrini without an offensive opportunity as Franklin & Marshall improved to 2-3-2 all-time against the Cavaliers.
In goal, Ed Stelz (Jr., Kew Gardens, NY/Loomis Chaffee) recorded three saves on four shots, while Cabrini goalie Andrew Brady notched 10 saves on 17 Franklin & Marshall shots.
The Diplomats (0-0-1, 0-0 Centennial Conference) will continue the season on September 4 at home versus cross-county rival Elizabethtown College for the Smith-Herr Boot.
Established in 1978, the trophy is to memorialize former F&M coach Robert Smith and longtime Elizabethtown Athletic Director Ira Herr. The Bronze Boot is a bronzed soccer shoe originally worn by Al Hershey, who played for the Jays and later coached at Franklin & Marshall.
