Box Score ANNVILLE, PA - Forward Chris Walters (So., Winslow, ME/Winslow) beat Lebanon Valley College goalie Tim Mehl one-on-one at the 34:13 mark for the only score Franklin & Marshall needed as the Diplomats men's soccer picked up its first win of the season and remained unbeaten with a 1-0 victory over the Dutchmen in non-conference action.
The Dutchmen had a chance to tie the game as F&M goalie Ed Stelz (Jr., Washingtonville, NY/Kew Gardens) received a red card for tangling with Nick Wanyo on a breakaway at the 69:29 mark, but backup Sandy Welsch (Jr., Fallston, MD/Fallston) entered the game and stopped the penalty kick to preserve the Diplomats' victory.
In goal, Stelz made three first half saves and Welsch stopped three shots in the second half as the Diplomats recorded their second straight shutout after a 0-0 tie with the University of Scranton on September 7.
Overall, F&M has not allowed a goal in the last 276 minutes going back to a score by Elizabethtown's Brian Healy in a 1-1 tie versus the Blue Jays on September 4.
For Lebanon Valley, Mehl made four saves as the Dutchmen fall to 1-3 on the season.
The win improves F&M to 26-1-1 all-time against Lebanon Valley as Franklin & Marshall has won 12 straight meetings versus the Dutchmen since a 1-0 loss in 1989.
Franklin & Marshall will continue the season on September 17 at home versus McDaniel College in the Centennial Conference opener. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
