Box Score ALLENTOWN, PA - David Steiner (Fr., Chappaqua, NY/Horace Greeley) scored and assisted on insurance goals as the Franklin & Marshall College men's soccer team shutout Muhlenberg College 3-0 in Centennial Conference action at Varsity Field.
The win snapped a 13-game Centennial Conference home win streak by the Mules (6-2, 2-1 Centennial Conference) and marks the second straight year the Diplomats (3-2-3, 2-1 Centennial Conference) handled Muhlenberg as F&M won 4-2 in Lancaster on September 29, 2004. Further, the victory avenged a 1-0 loss to Muhlenberg in the Centennial Conference playoffs in Lancaster last year.
Franklin & Marshall took the lead less than 25 minutes into the game as Alex Shuptar (Jr., Philadelphia, PA/Kents Hill) found Ben Wilson (Sr., Lititz, PA/Lititz Christian) who ripped a shot past Muhlenberg goalie Peter Bennett for a 1-0 lead at the 24:17 mark.
Steiner added to the lead nearly twelve minutes later as he buried a shot into the net at 36:13 to give the Diplomats a 2-0 lead entering halftime.
Chris Campbell (So., Narberth, PA/Friends Central) finished the Diplomats' scoring as he finished a pass from Steiner at 61:33 to ice the win and hand Muhlenberg its second loss of the season.
In goal, Ed Stelz (Jr., Kew Gardens, NY/Loomis Chaffee) recorded two saves on nine Muhlenberg shots to earn the win, while Bennett stopped one of the Diplomats' nine shots to take the loss.
The win improves F&M to 28-23-3 all-time against Muhlenberg since the series began in 1948 and raises the program's record to 442-435-79 all-time since the first F&M intercollegiate soccer game in 1926.
Further, the loss marks the first time Muhlenberg was shutout by a Centennial Conference opponent in Allentown since a 0-0 tie versus McDaniel College on October 2, 2004 and the first home shutout conference loss since a 3-0 defeat by Gettysburg College on September 28, 2002.
Franklin & Marshall will continue the season on October 1 at home versus Swarthmore College. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m.
