Box Score COLLEGEVILLE, PA -- Melissa Buckley scored on a penalty corner with 3:42 left to play to lift #2 Ursinus over #12 Franklin & Marshall in Centennial Conference field hockey action.
In a rematch of the 2004 Centennial Conference championship game, the Bears (6-1, 3-0 CC) capitalized on two out of 21 penalty corners taken on the afternoon to remain undefeated in conference play. Molly Stevens, who assisted both Ursinus goals, connected with Buckley in the 67th minute for the game winner.
Eileen Keever (Sr., Prospect Park, PA/Interboro) scored for the Diplomats (7-2, 1-1 CC) and Michelle Altman (Sr., Trumbull, CT/Trumbull) stopped 12 of the Bears' 22 shots, including seven saves in the first half.
Although Ursinus held a 13-4 shot advantage in the first half, both teams headed into intermission scoreless. The Bears managed to get the first goal on a penalty corner in the 42nd minute for a 1-0 lead as Karen Wendler collected the ball at the top of the circle and blasted a scoop shot into the upper corner of the cage.
Allison Barthold (So., Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) helped Franklin & Marshall balance the score with a pass to Keever in a scramble in front of the net to knot the score at one-to-one less than 10 minutes following Wendler's goal.
At the 66:18 mark, Stevens took the initial hit on the awarded penalty corner and sent the ball to a squared-up Buckley who fired a shot into the lower right corner for the game-winner.
Jessica Lamina made five saves on the afternoon for the Bears to earn the victory, while Ursinus held a 21-7 advantage in penalty corners.
Franklin & Marshall will continue the season on October 1 at home versus Washington College. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
