Diplomats Get the Boot as F&M Plays to 1-1 Tie Versus Elizabethtown in Men's Soccer

Box Score

LANCASTER, PA - Franklin & Marshall College goalie Ed Stelz (Jr., Kew Gardens, NY/Loomis Chaffee) made eight saves and midfielder Ryan McGonigle (So., Chadds Ford, PA/Unionville) scored on a penalty kick as the Diplomats men's soccer team played to a 1-1 tie versus Elizabethtown College in double overtime to win the Smith-Herr Boot Trophy.

The tie marks the second straight for the Diplomats (0-0-2, 0-0 Centennial Conference) as F&M played to a 1-1 double overtime tie with Cabrini College on September 1 at Baker Campus.

Against the Blue Jays, F&M jumped out to a 1-0 lead as Elizabethtown's Brennan Reichenbach dragged down Brandon Corday (So., Morton Grove, IL/Niles Township) in the box to earn a penalty shot which McGonigle ripped into the net past goalie A.J. Fleisher at the 28:00 mark.

Elizabethtown knotted the game five minutes later as Brian Healy punched in a penalty shot at 33:59 to knot the game at 1-1.

Defense was the story of the day from there as Stelz made eight saves on 11 shots in the game, while Fleisher stopped six of the Diplomats' eight shots.

Overall, Elizabethtown led the game in nearly every statistical category as the Blue Jays held margins in shots (11-to-eight), corner kicks (five-to-one) and fouls (25-to-20).

The Diplomats took the trophy from Elizabethtown due to the rules of the award that state that the team that does not hold the trophy receives it for tying the previous winner. The game marked the second time in three tries F&M has taken the bronzed shoe away from the Blue Jays as Franklin & Marshall knocked off Elizabethtown 2-1 in Lancaster during the 2001 season.

Elizabethtown earned the trophy back in 2002 with a 3-1 victory at home before holding off the Diplomats 1-0 in overtime in Lancaster during the 2003 season and 1-0 in 2004.

The last time the trophy exchanged hands on a tie was in 1988 when F&M took the award as the two teams played to a 2-2 draw.

Established in 1978, the trophy is to memorialize the memories of former F&M coach Robert Smith and longtime Elizabethtown Athletic Director Ira Herr. The Bronze Boot is a bronzed soccer shoe originally worn by Al Hershey, who played for the Jays and later coached at Franklin & Marshall.

The tie improves F&M to 8-23-4 all-time against Elizabethtown in men's soccer since the series began in 1939.

Franklin & Marshall will continue the season on September 7 at the University of Scranton. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
