Phelan Spikes Elizabethtown as Diplomats Roll to 3-1 Win in Volleyball

Box Score

LANCASTER, PA - Outside hitter Margot Phelan (Fr., Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) recorded 22 kills and five digs to lead the Franklin & Marshall College women's volleyball team to a 3-1 (28-30, 30-16, 30-24, 30-26) in non-conference action at the Mayser Center versus Elizabethtown College.

Following a 28-30 loss in game one, the Diplomats rallied behind the hitting of Phelan and the setting of Jackie Skibbie (Sr., Darby, PA/Merion Mercy) who handed out 44 assists in the match with 11 digs, six service aces and two block assists.

In addition, Kayleen Bailey (Sr., Baltimore, MD/Institute of Notre Dame) recorded seven kills, eight digs, four aces and four block assists, while Susan Taylor (So., The Woodlands, TX/John Cooper) added 12 kills, two solo blocks and three block assists as the Diplomats recorded their 11th straight win against Elizabethtown dating back to a loss in 1995 and took the "Harrisburg Spike Match".

Named in honor of Harrisburg Pike, the road on which both Elizabethtown and Franklin & Marshall College are located, the "Harrisburg Spike" match is one of two trophy games between the Diplomats and Elizabethtown as the two schools compete for the Smith-Herr Boot in men's soccer.

Previously, the loser of the "Spike" match was awarded a wood carving of a pike (i.e. fish) created by then Franklin & Marshall College head coach Steve Coulson. However, prior to the 2002 season, the pike was lost and has never been replaced.

Overall, F&M is 2-0 in trophy games with Elizabethtown this year as the Diplomats men's soccer team tied the Blue Jays 1-1 in double overtime on September 4 to take the Smith-Herr Boot trophy.

Franklin & Marshall (3-1, 0-0 Centennial Conference) will continue the season on September 14 at home versus Washington College in the Centennial Conference season opener. Match time is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Mayser Center.
