GRANTHAM, PA -- Arcadia University scored in the first overtime period to give the Knights a 3-2 victory over Franklin & Marshall in first round NCAA action on Friday night at Messiah College.
After a scoreless first half, Matt McCall put F&M on the board with a header off a perfect Brandon Corday crossing pass at 58:01. Arcadia came back to tie the score at one with a direct kick at 80:27 that sailed into the upper right corner past Diplomat netminder Ed Stelz. The Diplomats countered and took the lead as another Corday cross found Chris Campbell in front of the goal. Campbell headed the ball into the back of the net at 86:45 for what appeared to be the winning goal. But a last ditch Arcadia surge resulted in a goal at 88:02 and sent the game into extra periods at 2-2.
At 5:37 in the first overtime, Arcadia scored the winner to advance to the second round where they will play defending national champion Messiah College who had defeated DeSales 2-0 earlier in the evening.
Stelz had five saves to finish off his remarkable career in goal for Franklin & Marshall.
The loss ends the season for the Diplomats (13-4-3).
