LANCASTER, Pa. -
Sarah Meisenberg and Brittany Braxton teamed up to lead Franklin & Marshall's women's basketball team (1-1) to a 56-52 win over Villa Julie (0-2) in the consolation game of the 19th Annual Terry Greene Tip-Off Classic. Sunday afternoon's Mayser Center win marks the first for the Diplomats' new mentor, Ashlee Courter.
Meisenberg scored 26 points to pace Franklin & Marshall. None were bigger than her final five. The Diplomats' guard drained a three-pointer with 35 ticks left in the game to give her squad a 54-52 edge. She then stole the ball from Villa Julie's Cara Hill on the ensuing possession, took the foul and sank a pair at the line to ice the Mustangs.
Meisenberg's three was set up by Braxton's 14th and final rebound of the game. In addition to her 26 points, Meisenberg completed the game with eight rebounds, four steals and a pair of assists. That effort landed her on the All-Tournament Team.
Villa Julie benefited from 11 points from Megan Lanasa and 10 more from Cara Hill. Hill, who was also named to the All-Tournament team, saw her action limited by early foul trouble. The Mustangs' Tanisha Foster was outstanding defensively. She blocked 10 shots, pulled down eight rebounds, and recorded three steals in the loss.
With the victory, Franklin & Marshall improved to 1-1, while Villa Julie dropped to 0-2. The Diplomats open the Centennial portion of their slate on Tuesday when Gettysburg pays a visit to the Mayser Center.
