Diplomats Stop Stanford 7-2 for #19 National Ranking at 2006 Howe Cup

BOSTON, MA - Franklin & Marshall College used victories at #1-2, 4-7 and #9 to defeat Stanford University 7-2 in the #19-20 national ranking match as part of the Walker Cup at the 2006 Howe Cup women's squash team nationals hosted by Harvard University.

The win avenges a 7-2 loss to the Cardinal at the Yale Round Robin Tournament on January 20-22 as the Diplomats improve to 3-2 all-time against Stanford in women's squash.

Playing at the secondary site of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the Diplomats (9-9) dominated the match and avenged some losses as Freddy McNeely (Jr., Newtown Square, PA/Hill School) defeated Brooksie Riley 4-9, 9-1, 9-4, 9-0 at #1 to avenge a 3-2 loss to Riley at Yale.

Jessica Mitchell (Jr., Devonshire, Bermuda/Canterbury School) swept Ashleight Pattee 9-0, 9-0, 9-1 at #2 to avenge a 3-0 loss, while Amanda Lesko (So., Denver, CO/St. Mary's Academy) rolled over Liz Buch 9-6, 9-0, 9-6 at #4 in her first competition against Stanford this year. Tracey Sole (Fr., Glendale, Zimbabwe/Peterhouse Girl's School) tacked on a 9-6, 9-7, 9-3 win over Cate Crowley at #5 in her first competition against the Cardinal this season, before Lizzy Denenberg (Sr., Wilmington, DE/Sanford School) handled Rachel Deming 9-2, 9-2, 9-2 at #6 in her final intercollegiate squash match.

Barbara Bee (Jr., Millersville, PA/Penn Manor) added a 9-2, 9-7, 9-0 victory over Stephanie Kwok at #7 and Margaret Seaman (Jr., Cazenovia, NY/Northwest Academy) rallied from an early 1-0 deficit to edge Anne Herbert 5-9, 9-6, 9-0, 0-9, 9-1 at #9 to round out the 7-2 victory.

The win gives F&M the #19 ranking in the final Collegiate Squash Association poll, while Stanford takes the #20 ranking. The rankings mark a trade between the two schools as Stanford entered the Walker Cup Tournament ranked #19, while F&M came in with the #20 national ranking.

Franklin & Marshall, Stanford and the rest of the Collegiate Squash Association will continue the season on March 2-5 at the Individual Championships hosted by Amherst College.
