Backed by a strong defense and timely scoring, the Franklin & Marshall men's soccer squad (2-1) came away with consecutive wins Saturday, Sept. 9 and Sunday, Sept. 10 to win the Virginia Wesleyan Soccer Tournament.
Coach Dan Wagner's squad turned in back-to-back 1-0 wins, the first over Randolph Macon College. David Steiner scored in the 14th minute on a shot on the run from in close to seal the first win, while Ryan McGonigle put in a rebound shot after a save to net the 1-0 championship win over 20th ranked Virginia Wesleyan.
McGonigle's goal came in the 25th minute.
Meanwhile, goalkeeper Ed Stelz - fronted by a strong defense, earned consecutive shutouts.
F&M opened its season last weekend with a 1-0 loss to Elizabethtown. They will be in action again Sept. 14th at home against Labanon Valley.
