Two was the magic number on Saturday as Dickinson and Franklin & Marshall split a Centennial Conference baseball double-header at Caplan Field. The Red Devils won the first game 2-1, putting the brakes on F&M's nine game win streak. The Diplomats responded with a 2-0 win the in the second game.
None of the runs in the first game were earned as Dickinson's Brian Kelley and F&M's Dan Tischler (New York, NY / Horace Mann) limited batters to seven combined hits. Kelley struck out six and allowed four hits to move to 2-2 on the season. Tischler (3-1) was saddled with his first loss of the season, having limited Dickinson to three hits while striking out three.
The Devils scored two runs on three errors in the third. Billy McGuire (Chappaqua, NY / Horace Greeley) scored after getting on with a leadoff error in the fifth. He stole second and went to third on a wild pitch before Mark Minutaglio (Armonk, NY / Byram Hills) drove him in for F&M's only run of the game.
Jeffrey Rowand (York, PA / Dallastown) improved to 4-0 working a complete game in the nightcap. He allowed five hits and struck out three in nine innings of work, and went 2-for-4 at the plate with a run scored.
Minutaglio's single up the middle opened the fifth inning. He stole second, and came home on a Patrick O'Reilly (Mt. Laurel, NJ / Lenape) single to rightfield for the game-winning run. Rowand was the insurance marker in the sixth. He opened the frame with a single, then stole second. Gordon Pellegrini (Sparkhill, NY / Tappan Zee) brought him home punching a shot through the left side of the Devils defense.
Franklin & Marshall improved moved to 16-9 (10-2 CC) on the season, while Dickinson went to 10-18 (6-6 CC) with the split. F&M is scheduled for a pair at Elizabethtown on Sunday, weather permitting.
