LANCASTER, Pa. -
Dan Tischler (New York, NY / Horace Greely) and Brad Andres (Belle Mead, NJ / Carroll) combined to scatter eight hits over the 16 innings of a Centennial Conference (CC) baseball doubleheader and lead Franklin & Marshall to a sweep of McDaniel on Saturday.
The Diplomats (21-11, 15-3 CC) plated five runs in the sixth inning of game one to win 5-0 before taking the nightcap by an identical score. By virtue of a Haverford 2-1, 12-inning victory over Johns Hopkins in game two, Franklin & Marshall earns the top spot in next weekend's double-elimination CC tournament. The Blue Jays will be the two seed and host the winner of Monday's coin flip between Ursinus and Gettysburg on Friday. The Diplomats will host the other team on Friday. The tournament continues on Saturday and Sunday in Lancaster.
Adam Pelta (Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) notched three of the eight hits for the Green Terror (9-22, 4-14 CC), including two of the squad's three hits in game two.
After Tischler and Chase Wolf (Middletown, MD/Middletown) battled in a pitchers' duel through the first five innings of game one, including five innings of no-hit ball from Wolf, Franklin & Marshall used a bunt to start its sixth-inning rally.
Tom Miller (York, PA / Central York) reached on a throwing error with his leadoff bunt attempt. Mark Minutaglio (Armonk, NY / Byram Hills) followed with a four-pitch walk before the Green Terror attempted to get the lead runner on Jason Anderson's (Westfield, NJ / Westfield) sacrifice attempt, but all three runners were safe to load the bags.
A Jeff Rowand (York, PA / Dallastown) walk forced home Miller before a Rich Gallugi single into shallow center field scored Minutaglio and chased Wolf.
Back-to-back fielder's choice plays greeted reliever Brian Rosato (Narvon, PA/Pequea Valley) before Gordon Pellegrini (Sparkhill, NY / Tappan Zee) lined a two-run single to the gap. A Billy McGuire (Chappaqua, NY / Horace Greeley) infield single plated Shea Moriarty (Wilton, CT / Wilton) to make it a 5-0 game.
A two-out error and back-to-back singles from Brent Toms (Hagerstown, MD/North Hagerstown) and Russell Coover (Schuylkill Haven, PA/Blue Mountain) loaded the bases in the bottom of the frame, but Tischler got a line out to preserve the shutout.
In the nightcap, Andres allowed just seven McDaniel runners to reach bases but strong defense plays retired four of those runners before innings ended.
A Minutaglio two-run single in the top of the fourth staked the Diplomats to a 2-0 lead.
A pair of back-to-back, two-out errors and a hit batsman loaded the bases in the eight before an Andrew Hanson (Lansdale, PA / Germantown, Academy) triple cleared the bases and set the final margin.
