LANCASTER, Pa. - It was never pretty, but Franklin &
Marshall scratched and clawed its way back from a 2-0 hole to knock
off Johns Hopkins 3-2 in Centennial Conference (CC) volleyball
Wednesday night. The hard-earned win marks F&M's
20th of the season, the first time the Diplomats have
hit that mark since the 2006 season.
The Diplomats (20-5, 6-1 CC) had to fight for every point until
the decisive game when F&M built a 6-1 lead on a Caitlin
Krutsick service run that saw three of her four service aces in the
match. The Diplomats did not look back from there, getting help
from two Blue Jays (13-9, 2-4 CC) attack errors and another service
error.
With the exception of the final game, F&M was out of sync
all night, dropping the first two games by a combined four
points. F&M threw up 20 attack errors on the night to go
with 14 service errors.
The errors left F&M in an early hole. Hopkins' Alex Zenoff
piled up four of her 14 kills on the night in the decisive stretch
of the second game to push the Diplomats to the brink, 2-0.
Undaunted, F&M settled in for the third game and saw Candice
Tussing take to the floor for the first time since an injury at the
start of the month. Lifted by her two kill, one assist effort in
the opening 6-2 F&M run of the third, the Diplomats climbed
into the driver's seat on a bumpy road. Tussing played extensively
throughout the final three games, working her way to seven kills
and a pair of service aces.
The Jays' managed to knot things up at 17-17 and again at 22-22
in the third, but back-to-back kills from Tussing and Jian
Lipowcan set up game point to keep F&M alive. The Jays' Sarah
Feicht worked Hopkins back within one before an attack error
knotted it again at 24. Another F&M first-year, Sydney Seydel,
found some open real estate on the following rally, to set up game
point in the third. A Hopkins attack error kept F&M alive.
Rom and Morano dominated the fourth game with repeated F&M
kills. Rom finished the match with nine kills, while Morano posted
a team-season high of 18 kills. Seydel had 12 kills for F&M,
which posted a team-season high of 68 kills in the comeback
victory. Pam Horner set up the offense with a season high 53
assists, and managed seven kills of her own, mostly soft
touches on fake passes. Rom bailed F&M out with a season high
25 digs. Morano and Seydel were blocking forces as well.
Morano had three solo rejections and one assisted block. Seydel
flipped those numbers.
The Jays got 15 kills and 14 digs from Allison Cappelaere and 43
assists and 11 digs from Becky Paynter. Sarah Feicht posted 11
kills for the Jays.
F&M returns to action in one week when the Diplomats head to
Carlisle to face Dickinson in more Centennial action.
