LANCASTER, Pa. -- Down two scores to start the fourth quarter,
Franklin & Marshall rallied with three unanswered touchdowns to
beat Wilkes 29-24 in the ECAC South Atlantic Bowl Saturday at
Sponaugle-Williamson Field.
John Harrison (29-of-38 passing, 231 yards) hit Ryan Murray at
the front left pylon for a two-yard scoring strike, and the
go-ahead score, with eight seconds left in the game.
The final F&M drive was highlighted when Jarrell Diggs
connected with George Eager (10 catches, 126 yards) on a 44-yard
pass to the Wilkes 26.
The score capped off a 19-point fourth quarter for the Diplomats
(9-2) as they trailed 24-10 heading into the final quarter.
Harrison made it 24-17 when he hooked up with John Kaschak on a
9-yard scoring strike with 14:04 left in the fourth.
The drive was sustained when Murray converted a third-and-six
with a nine-yard rush where he broke two tackles, braced himself
from falling down with his hand, and dove to the F&M 40.
Kaschak hit pay dirt with a five-yard run with 7:04 left.
Murray's two-point run failed to keep Colonels (6-5) a head
24-23.
Kaschak was named the MVP of the game. The sophomore finished
with 22 carries for 137 yards, his second consecutive game hitting
the century mark, and 54 receiving yards on seven catches.
Chris Horn put Wilkes on the board first with a 37-yard field goal
before the Diplomats answered when Harrison found Michael Deutch in
the end zone for a 16-yard score.
F&M wouldn't see the lead again until the fourth
quarter.
A 26-yard scoring toss from Rob Johnson (14-of-22, 243 yards) to
Shawn Gregson gave the Colonels a 10-7 lead.
Mike Shin knotted the game at 10-10 with a 20-yard field
goal.
Wilkes answered just before the break with a Zach Tivald
seven-yard rushing score and added to that early in the third when
Johnson hooked up with Gennaro Zangardi for an 81-yard touchdown
and a 24-10 lead.
NOTES: Eager became the first Diplomat to
produce over 4,000 all-purpose yards. He has 4,133 yards in three
years. … Eager (2,572 career receiving yards) also became
the third receiver in F&M history to amass over 2,500 yards.
…Harrison continued his assault on both the F&M and
Centennial Conference record books by becoming the first
quarterback to have more than 250 completions, 30 TDs and 3,000
yards. He finished the season with 287 completions for 3,096 yards
and 32 TDs.
