LANCASTER, Pa. -- Both Franklin & Marshall men's and women's
swim teams showed solid on Sunday for the third and final session
of the 14th annual F&M Invitational. The men held
onto the second place position they occupied in the 10-team field
entering the day, while the women managed to climb a spot for a
fifth out of the 12 teams visiting Lancaster. The College of
New Jersey captured the Invitational on both the men's and women's
sides.
Matt Jaffee got the men off to a strong start with a win in the
200-yard backstroke. His 1:54.11 reset the meet record and was 2.53
seconds faster than the second place finisher, Adam Taft of
Gettysburg. Connor Finnegan contributed fifth place points in the
race, while David Fell offered eighth place points.
F&M piled up points in the 200-yard breaststroke as well.
All-American Tom Grabiak touched at 2:07.66 to edge out TCNJ's
Myles O'Connor. O'Connor had edged Grabiak in the 100-yard version
of the stroke in a dual meet earlier in the season. He touched .28
seconds after Grabiak on Sunday. The Diplomats got additional 12
points from Travis Catania in seventh place.
Three Diplomats finished in the top ten in the 200-yard
butterfly. Eliot Scymanski took second place in 1:59.78, followed
by Mason Wash in 2:00.56. Scott Rownd placed eighth at 2:04.54.
TCNJ's Tom Medvecky took the event in 1:55.61.
TCNJ dominated the 1,650-yard freestyle taking the first four
places. Tim Rauch led the Lions' charge with a 16:35.88. F&M's
Max Blum was the first non-Lion to touch the wall. Blum clocked a
17:17.62.
F&M's women saved their best for last, placing a pair of
swimmers in the top ten of the meet's final race, the 1,650 free.
Olivia Hill collected second place points with a 17:57.91, while
Garland Bartlett picked up points in seventh place. Bartlett swam
an 18:31.34. TCNJ's Margaret Molloy won the race in 17:40.68.
First-year Ana Franluebbers took seventh in the 100-yard
freestyle with a 55.49. TCNJ's Laura Pierce earned the win,
swimming a 53.40. Franzluebbers teamed with Krista Hollingsworth,
Katherine DeCrosta, and Courtney Gregor for a 3:43.50 in the
400-yard freestyle relay. TCNJ took the race in meet record fashion
with a 3:35.30.
Laura Bassford finished seventh in the 200-yard butterfly.
Bassford touched at 2:18.51. The Diplomats got ninth place points
in the race from Rebecca Rice and 10th place points from
Emily Zacherl. Washington's Rachel Glasser won the race with a new
meet record of 2:04.10. It was one of five meet records that fell
during Sunday's session and one of 15 that fell during the 36-race
invite.
