LANCASTER, Pa. - Franklin & Marshall's men picked up their
20th consecutive Centennial Conference (CC) swimming
dual meet victory with a 124-68 win over Ursinus Saturday
afternoon. The Diplomats (4-2, 4-0 CC) have not dropped a
league-dual meet since being edged at Swarthmore in November of
2006.
The Diplomats posted the top time in nine of the 11 events with
freshman Jake Reingold securing victories in the 500 and 1,650-yard
freestyles. Reingold built on F&M's early lead in the
second men's race, the 1,650, swimming the 4,950-foot race in
17:05.73 for a nearly 10 second win over the Bears (5-5, 1-4 CC)
Scott Paine. The freshmen put up a more convincing win in the 500
with a 16 second edge on team and classmate, Max Blum. Reingold
swam a 5:00.10 with Blum securing second place points at 5:16.03
three seconds ahead of the Bears' Kevin Tallon.
F&M wasted little time in building its lead. The
combination of Matt Jaffee, Tom Grabiak, David Apple and Zach Wilt
cruised to first place points in the 400-yard medley relay with a
time of 3:39.11. They were followed to the wall by teammates David
Fell, Travis Catania, Scott Rownd and Tom Bergstrom at 3:48.87.
Apple, Bergstrom and Jaffee picked up individual wins in the
100-yard freestyle, the 50-yard freestyle and 200-yard individual
medley, respectively. F&M swept the top three spots in the I.M.
with Fell and Rownd taking second and third.
In addition to the medley win, Jaffee captured the 200-yard
backstroke, edging out teammate, Conor Finnegan. Finnegan had
already edged out a teammate in the day's tightest race.
Finnegan swam the 200-yard freestyle in 1:50.05, with the
Diplomats' All-American, Tom Grabiak, .01 seconds in his wake.
Swimming in exhibition mode, Grabiak cruised to the top time in
the 200-yard breaststroke. He got to the final touch in 2:12.23.
Also swimming in exhibition, the team of Apple, Bergstrom, Reingold
and Wilt clocked the best time in the 200-yard free relay to close
out the day.
The Diplomats return to the pool next Saturday against
Dickinson.
