LANCASTER, Pa. – Williams College dealt a 9-0 setback to
Franklin & Marshall in women's squash Saturday afternoon.
The #8 Ephs (14-5) took eight of the nine scoring matches in three,
spoiling the #18 Diplomats (9-12) senior recognition day.
F&M's pair of senior captains, Courtney Mulligan and Dana
Russo, were recognized prior to the start of the match.
Mulligan (11-8), already in the top 20 for career wins at
F&M, was seeking her 35th career victory, however, the Ephs #7,
Julia Reiser, had different plans for the day. Reiser handed
Mulligan an 11-2, 11-5, 11-2 defeat. Russo also fell in three in an
exhibition match, moving her exhibition record to 2-2 on the season
and her overall record to 10-11.
Gabby Robinson (8-3) was the only F&M player to take her
opponent to four games. Robinson, a winner of seven of her last 10
matches, fended off elimination in the third with an 11-6 effort
against Kavitha Mannava. Robinson was in the hunt in the fourth
game, but fell 9-11, as she did in the first.
The Williams victory marked the first meeting between the
institutions since 2002, and halted a two-match run by the
Diplomats in the series. The Ephs now hold a 12-8 lead margin in
matches with F&M. The match also marked a homecoming for a
player in purple. Mia Fry, the daughter of F&M President, John
Fry, is a first-year at Williams. She won her exhibition match with
the Diplomats' Aleka Woods in three.
The loss wraps the Diplomats' regular season at 9-12. The
2009-2010 version of F&M women's squash will look to
complete the first season with double-digits in the wins column in
over a decade two weekends from now at the Howe Cup, hosted by
Princeton.
