LANCASTER, Pa. - Franklin & Marshall's
men's swimmers collected three gold medals through the first five
events of the 2010 Centennial Conference (CC) Championships to take
a lead into the second day of the three day meet. A sweep of the
medals in the 200-yard individual medley built the Diplomats'
lead.
Tom Grabiak broke his own record set during this morning's
qualifying in capturing the gold in the 200 I.M. Grabiak swam an
NCAA automatic qualifying time of 1:51.97 in this evening's final.
Second place went to Matt Jaffee with a B-Cut time of 1:54.14.
David Fell took the bronze medal to complete the F&M run on the
scoreboard.
Grabiak and Jaffee joined David Apple and Zach Wilt for a B-Cut
and meet championship time in the 400-yard medley relay to close
the night. The group swam to gold in 3:26.63. Freshman Jake
Reingold delivered an NCAA B-Cut mark in the 500-yard freestyle.
His 4:38.41 delivered Franklin & Marshall's 11th CC
gold medal in the event. Apple and Wilt combined with Tom
Bergstrom, and Ken Dautrich to collect a bronze medal in the
200-yard free relay.
Bergstrom, who took bronze in the 50-yard freestyle, put on one
of the night's most impressive swims working the anchor leg of the
consolation finals in the 400-yard medley relay. The Diplomats
trailed Swarthmore's entry by nearly two body lengths heading into
the final 100-yards. Bergstrom covered the gap and then some to
deliver ninth place points for F&M.
The order of finish in that race matched the order of finish of
the top two teams on the night. Franklin & Marshall wrapped up
day one with 258 points. Swarthmore is in second with 207. Swimming
resumes tomorrow morning with the qualifying session getting
underway at 10:00 am.
