NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Wesleyan defeated Franklin & Marshall 5-4
in the Walker Cup consolation finals Sunday morning. The Diplomats
(10-14) were shorthanded without the services No. 1 Morgan Smith in
the lineup, forcing everyone up a spot.
Despite being shorthanded, the Diplomats managed to sneak one
win in the top half of the lineup. No. 2 Katherine Barnes (9-15)
handled the Cardinals' (17-15) Grace Zimmerman in four, 11-7, 11-6,
10-12, 11-3. The balance of F&M's wins came at the bottom of
the lineup, which turned in a particularly strong weekend.
No. 6 Gabby Robinson and No. 8 Dana Russo each picked up their
third wins in as many matches on the weekend for F&M. Robinson
(11-3) needed four games to dispatch Jenny Chu 11-9, 11-7, 11-13,
12-10. Russo (11-10) took out Ashley Garrett in five, 11-8, 9-11,
11-7, 5-11, 11-5. No. 9 Aleka Woods (6-2) completed F&M's sweep
of the final three positions by defeating Elizabeth Larner, also in
five, 11-6, 7-11, 11-7, 7-11, 12-10.
With the defeat, the Diplomats finish ranked 20th in
the nation.
