CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Washington's five run third
inning proved to be the difference as the Shoremen defeated
Franklin & Marshall 9-4 in both team's Centennial
Conference (CC) opener. The Diplomats fell to 5-7-1, 0-1 CC while
Washington improved to 6-4, 1-0 CC.
The Shoremen opened up the game scoring a run in the first two
innings. The Diplomats countered in the top of the third on a
two-out rally. Matt Will reached on a double to left center and
J.T. Triantos took first on a fielding error. Will crossed the
plate on the same error, making the score 1-2 in the
Shoremen's favor.
Washington scored five runs in the top of the third inning to
take a 7-1 lead. John Rolewicz led off with a solo shot to
centerfield. Huntley Mitchell drove in Ryan Normoyle on a single up
the middle to make it 4-1. In the next at-bat, Kyle Aldrich doubled
down the left field line to plate Ben Jardot. Tyler Cotterell
finished the scoring with a two-run single through the right side
that drove in Mitchell and Aldrich.
F&M added a run in the fourth, seventh and ninth. Nick
Rolnick started the fourth frame off with a double and Blue
Well's single four batters later moved Rolnick across the
dish. Will picked up the other two runs, tallying three on the day.
Russell Tischler went 2-for-3 at the plate while Jay Anderson
and Wells both picked up an RBI. Mitchell led the way for
Washington with a 2-for-4 hitting performance. He scored two runs
and added two more RBIs.
Anderson took the loss working 2.2 innings. He gave up seven
runs on eight hits in the contest. Shane Mattingly picked up the
win, giving up one earned run in seven innings.
F&M returns to the diamond on Friday when the Diplomats host
Washington at 3:30 p.m.
