LANCASTER, Pa. – Washington's two-run second inning
proved to be the difference as the Shoremen defeated Franklin &
Marshall 2-1 in a Centennial Conference (CC) baseball game Friday
afternoon. The Shoremen improved to 7-4 (2-0 CC) while the
Diplomats fell to 5-8-1 (0-2 CC).
Ryan Normoyle singled up the middle to get Washington started in
the top of the second. He stole second and was plated by Ben
Jarot's single in the next at-bat. Jarot advanced to
second on a wild pitch and crossed the dish when Huntley Mitchell
doubled to left field.
Bill Murray scored the only run of the game for F&M when he
homered to left, starting off the fourth frame. The run cut
the Washington's lead to 2-1, but Neither team would get a
runner past second base between the top of the fifth inning and the
top of the ninth.
Murray got things started for the Diplomats in the ninth with a
single through the left side. Russell Tischler reached on a
fielder's choice in the next at-bat. Eric Bornstein also
reached on a fielder's choice with Tischler being tagged out
at second. Blue Wells reached on error by the first basemen, giving
F&M runners on first and second. Chris Keiper picked up his
third save of the year, inducing a ground ball from Drew Atkins to
end the game.
Josh Gray was saddled with the loss. Gray pitched seven innings,
striking out seven and allowing two runs. Chris Smith picked up his
second win of the year for the Shoremen. Smith worked eight
innings, striking out five and giving up one run.
Murray went 2-for-4 including his home run as the Diplomats
collected seven hits as a team.
Franklin & Marshall returns to diamond tomorrow when the
Diplomats travel to Dickinson for a CC double-header. The first
game with start at 12:30 with the second following approximately 20
minutes after the conclusion of game one.
