HAVERFORD, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall scored three runs
with two outs in the eighth inning, to break a 5-5 tie, and defeat
Haverford 8-6 in a Centennial Conference (CC) baseball game
Wednesday afternoon. The Diplomats improved to 12-14-1 (7-6 CC)
while the Fords fell to 18-10 (9-4 CC).
Eric Bornstein was issued a walk to give F&M its first
base runner of the eighth frame.
Aaron Gillette's bunt to
third in the next at-bat advanced Bornstein to second and placed
Gillette on first.
Matt Will lined out to left field in the next
plate appearance for the second out of inning.
J.T. Triantos
singled to left field and advanced to third on an error by the
leftfielder, clearing the bases, giving F&M a 7-5 edge. Bill
Murray hit a single in the next at-bat, plating Triantos for the
final run of the inning and an 8-5 F&M lead.
Haverford added a run in the bottom of the frame which
resulted in the 8-6 score.
The Diplomats struck first scoring four runs in the second
inning. Jay Anderson walked to start the frame and
Blue Wells hit a
home run to right center to put F&M up 2-0. Bornstein singled
two batters later and took third on a Gillette single. Will picked
up a single of his own, clearing the bases, which put F&M
4-0.
The Fords added a run in the bottom of the second and F&M
countered with one of its own in the fourth inning.
Bill Murray hit
a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Gillette for the run in the
fourth.
Haverford battled back, tying the game, with back-to-back two
run innings. The Fords added its runs in fifth and six innings to
tie the game at five apiece, setting up the Diplomats' eighth
inning.
Mike Ham picked up his first win of the year. Ham pitched four
innings and allowed one run. He struck out two and induced seven
ground outs.
Jonny Williams took the loss. Williams (4-2) worked the eighth
inning and gave up three runs.
Will, Murray and Wells all knocked in two runs apiece.
Murray and Wells both hit 2-for-4 from bag and Wells added a run of
his own. Gillette hit 3-for-4 and scored three runs.
Franklin & Marshall returns to action of Friday when the
Diplomats host Haverford for a 3:30 p.m. ballgame.
