SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Swarthmore swept Franklin & Marshall
Saturday afternoon in a Centennial Conference (CC) baseball
double-header. The Garnet took game one 18-5 and scored four runs
in the bottom of the ninth inning, to take an 8-7 win in the
nightcap. The Diplomats fell to 12-16-1 (7-8 CC) while the Garnet
improved to 18-12 (10-6 CC).
Swarthmore came out with hot bats in the first game, jumping
out to an early 7-0 lead through three innings. The Diplomats
answered with three runs in the fourth.
Eric Bornstein hit a bomb
to right field for the first two runs.
Matt Will plated
Aaron Gillette two batters later for a 7-3 score.
The Garnet answered with four runs in the bottom of the frame,
tacked on three more in the fifth and four in the sixth. F&M
added a run in the fifth and seventh innings.
Jason Anderson
homered in the fifth and
Matt Will crossed the bag after an error
in the seventh frame.
Will went 2-for-3 from the dish. He scored a run and knocked
in one.
Neil Mejia (5-2) went the distance, striking out seven batters
for the win.
Nick Markel took the loss and fell to 2-2. Markel gave up
seven runs in two innings of work.
F&M struck first in the second game when
Russell Tischler
plated Anderson with a single. Swarthmore countered in the
bottom of the frame, scoring three runs to take a 3-1 edge. The
Diplomats added a run in the third and took the lead with two more
in the fifth.
Bill Murray's single up the middle scored
J.T. Triantos
in the third frame. Gillette started the fifth off with a single
and Triantos followed with a single of his own, giving the
Diplomats runners on first and second. Will advanced the
runners with a ground out to the pitcher and Gillette and Triantos
scored off an error by the shortstop to give F&M a 4-3
advantage.
F&M added two more in the seventh and the Garnet added one
in the bottom of the frame. The Diplomats built their lead to 7-4
with a run in the eighth, setting up Swarthmore's
ninth.
Mike Cameron's double to deep centerfield brought home the
game-winning run as Swarthmore scored four runs in the ninth inning
to take an 8-7 victory.
Murray knocked in three runs and Tischler added two of his
own.
Mike Ham took the loss and dropped to 1-1 on the year. Adam
Koshkin picked up the win and improved to 2-0.
Johns Hopkins and Haverford earned CC playoff berths Saturday.
The Diplomats will battle for the last two remaining spots with
three CC games remaining this season.
Franklin & Marshall returns to the diamond tomorrow when
the Diplomats host Haverford for a 1 p.m. game.
