YORK, PA –York used a strong pitching performance and
timely hitting to secure a 10-1 victory over Franklin &
Marshall on Friday afternoon in a non-conference baseball game. The
Spartans improved to 21-12 overall while the Diplomats fell to
12-19-1 for the season.
The Diplomats struck early in the top of the first inning. Matt Will hit a single up the middle and Bill Murray laced a
single into left center to plate Will who was running on the
play.
York got on the board in the third on back-to-back infield
singles by Kyle Cook and Rick Shumway and a hit batter, which
loaded the bases for Mike Connolly. Connolly plated Worthman with
an RBI fielder's choice. C.T. Stanley walked to reload the bases
with one out. After a pop up, Rob Klinck hit a triple to the right
center gap, scoring all three runners, giving York a 4-1 lead.
The Spartans tacked on a pair of runs in the fourth as Jim
Meehan singled, moved to third on a hit and run single from
Worthman and scored on a Cook sacrifice fly. After a Shumway single
put runners at first and second, Connolly singled to right, scoring
Worthman and moving Shumway to third.
York tacked on a pair of runs in both the fifth and eighth
innings to provide for the final 10-1 margin.
Hayes took the loss as he allowed six runs on seven hits with
three walks and three strikeouts in his 3.1 innings of action.
Hayes falls to 0-2 with the loss. McCune allowed two runs, one
earned, on three hits in 2.2 innings on the hill. Zeke Fine allowed
two the last two runs on three hits and a walk as he pitched the
eighth for the Dips.
Murray led the Diplomats with two hits and an RBI and was the
only F&M hitter with multiple hits as Diplomats had just five
singles for the day.
Franklin & Marshall returns to action tomorrow when the
Diplomats host McDaniel for conference double-headers. First pitch
is slated for 12:30 p.m.
