Diplomats Split with Mules

Game 1 | Game 2

LANCASTER, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall split a Centennial Conference (CC) double-header with Muhlenberg on Saturday. The Diplomats escaped with a 3-2 win in the first game, and fell 13-11 in the night cap. The Diplomats moved to 10-10-1 (5-3 CC) on the year and the Mules put their record at 11-11 (5-3 CC).

Jason Anderson knocked in four runs in the second contest, making him the all-time RBI leader in Diplomats' history. Anderson currently has 103 career RBIs.

F&M went up 1-0 in the first inning of game one. Matt Will walked to start the frame and was brought home two batters later by Bill Murray. The Diplomats tacked on one more run in the fourth on a Drew Atkins RBI to go up 2-0.

Nick Markel pitched lights out, holding Muhlenberg hitless through three innings. He struck out seven in seven innings of work. The Mules managed one run the sixth, making it a 2-1 ballgame.

The Diplomats added an insurance run in the bottom of the inning to take a 3-1 edge. Eric Bornstein walked in the second at-bat to get a runner on base. One batter later, Will doubled down the left field line, plating Bornstein.

The Mules added a run in the seventh to get within a one, but Russell Tischler fired the ball over the diamond to pick off the runner and end the game.

Game two didn't start off well for F&M as the Mules scored nine runs in the first two frames. Muhlenberg picked up nine hits and made the best of three F&M errors to build an early 9-0 advantage. F&M did not quit and kept battling back, piecing together 11 runs over the next eight innings.

F&M trailed by three runs to the start the bottom of the ninth. Bornstein walked in the second plate appearance to but a man on first. Aaron Gillette moved Bornstein to second with single. Will reached on an error by the shortstop and Bornstein crossed the bag on the same play. With runners on first and second, Ryan Rechten retired the next two batters to pick up his first save of the year.

Jason Anderson finished with four RBIs, hitting 3-for-4 from plate and scoring two runs. Tischler knocked in two runs on 2-for-5 hitting. Nick Rolnick, J.T. Triantos and Will picked up an RBI apiece.

Mike Duranti took the loss, working an inning allowing five earned runs. Mike Ham worked the middle innings, pitching five full, striking out five.

Jason Daniel earned the win, improving to 3-1. Daniels pitched six innings, giving six earned runs.
