Box Score LANCASTER, Pa. -- Franklin & Marshall quickly built a 17-0
lead and never looked back in a 35-7 win over Washington & Lee
in the season opener for both teams. The Generals (0-1) turned the
ball over four times.
The turnovers included a pair of interceptions in the Diplomats
(1-0) end zone, and saw Shane Gray scoop
a Sam Massaro induced fumble to score from 25-yards out
just 43 seconds after F&M had gone ahead 7-0 on its opening
possession.
Despite a pair of penalties, F&M marched 79 yards on seven
plays to open the game. Running back John Kaschak
went into the endzone from five yards out on his sixth touch of the
drive to finish it off. He accounted for 30 of the yards on the
opening salvo, but the play that set the tone for the day came on
third and 11 on the F&M 20. John Harrison
found tight end Michael Deucth for the first down and then some on
a 53-yard catch and run that set up the score.
The Diplomats converted all eight third downs faced in the first
quarter, finishing the day 13-of-17. F&M piled up 312 yards of
total offense in the first half compared to Washington & Lee's
four. The Diplomats owned the ball for 23:27 of the first 30
minutes.
Harrison had thrown for 246 of his 305 yards on the day by
halftime. He completed 24 of his 31 attempts, on the afternoon
including three touchdown strikes. Two of the touchdowns came late
in the first half, giving the hosts a 29-0 lead at the break. He
tossed one more in the third quarter before taking in the rest of
the game from the sideline.
His first touchdown of the day was a nine-yard pass to Deutch
for his second and final catch of the day with 3:52 left in the
first half. The second touchdown pass came with nine seconds left
in the second quarter when he found Jay Ridinger
from 18-yards out on third and 10.
Ridinger had eight receptions for 82 yards on the afternoon. All
told, eight different receivers caught at least one pass, seven
from Harrsion. Freshman Tim Muller was
amongst them. He got beyond the Generals' secondary and walked
under a 38-yard pass from Harrison in the third quarter. It was the
first catch of his career, and only reception in the game.
The Generals threatened on the opening drive of the third
quarter, but on second and goal from the seven, Nick Barbieri
stepped in front of a W&L receiver to pick off Charlie Westfal
to end the drive. W&L finally broke through in the fourth
quarter when Harrison Hudson plunged in from four-yards out to cap
a 63-yard drive, their longest of the day by far.
The Generals threatened again late in the fourth quarter, but Chris
DeStefano intercepted Russell Stewart in the endzone to put the
already decided game on ice.
The Diplomats return to action next weekend against Ursinus in
the Centennial Conference opener for both teams.
