HAVERFORD, Pa. - Sam Lane's first-half strike would prove to be all the Franklin & Marshall men's soccer team would need as the Diplomats downed host Haverford, 1-0, in Centennial Conference (CC) action on Saturday afternoon. F&M improves to 4-2-1 overall and 1-1 in the CC, while Haverford drops to 3-4 overall and 0-2 in CC play.
Lane delivered the game's lone goal in the 31st minute following a pair of crisp passes from the Diplomats. Alex Grassi collected the ball just behind midfield on the F&M defensive half and sent a lofted pass forward down the left sideline, where Derek Pawlush was well-positioned and one-touched a feed inside to Lane, who was simultaneously streaking past Pawlush.
After re-directing the ball towards the center of the pitch with his knee, Lane unloaded a dipping shot from about 25 yards out that found the near-post netting and the Diplomats led, 1-0.
The Fords nearly evened the count in the 82nd minute as a header from David Restrepo bounced off the crossbar after a Haverford direct kick slipped through the hands of F&M goalkeeper T.J. White, but F&M was able to clear the attempt from danger and preserve the shutout win.
White registered four saves in his first career start to pick up the victory, while Andriy Mshanetskyy tallied two saves in a losing effort.
The Diplomats return home for the first time since Labor Day weekend on Tuesday, Sept. 27 against Ursinus at 5:00 pm.
