F&M Downs Ursinus

LANCASTER, Pa. - Franklin & Marshall captured first-place finishes in seven of 11 events to swim past visiting Ursinus, 126-79, in Centennial Conference (CC) men's swimming action on Saturday. The Diplomats (4-2, 4-0 CC) have now won four straight and remain perfect in CC competition, while the Bears drop to 5-4 overall and 2-3 in the CC.

F&M led from the get-go as the 200 yard medley relay team of David Fell, William Cappuccio, Richard Denton and John Zipp earned top honors in the day's first event with a time of 1:40.07 to give the Diplomats the early edge. Each of the four members of the 200 relay squad went on to take the top spot in an individual event, while Dennis Chen posted the other first-place individual finish for F&M.

Zipp secured first place in the 100 freestyle at 48.82 and also took second in the 50 freestyle with a mark of 22.39. The Diplomats swept the top-three places in the 100 as Zach Wilt (49.57) and Jin Hwang (49.79) touched in second and third, respectively.

In the 200 IM, Fell notched a first-place mark with a time of 2:03.41, followed by Cappuccio in second at 2:04.29 and Scott Rownd in third at 2:06.35. In addition to taking second in the 200 IM, Cappuccio outlasted Ursinus' Philip Quick by just .01 to win the 100 breastroke in 1:02.71, while teammate Travis Catania took third in 1:04.25.

Denton nabbed first in the 100 backstroke with a mark of 56.68. Chen won the 200 freestyle in 1:46.68, with Denton taking third with a time of 1:50.06. Chen later placed second in the 500 freestyle at 5:01.52, while Tim Landon captured third in the 500 at 5:07.52. Landon also took second in the 1650 freestyle with a mark of 17:31.46, followed by Paul Edwards in third at 17:56.77.

The Diplomats closed out the meet with a victory in the 200 freestyle relay as the team of Chen, Hwang, Jacob Gordin and Wilt capped off the day with a time of 1:30.25.

F&M returns to action in a week as it hosts Dickinson in CC action next Saturday at 1:00 pm.
