LANCASTER, Pa. - No. 7 Franklin & Marshall opened its 2012-13 campaign in convincing fashion with a 9-0 drubbing of No. 26 Drexel on Friday evening at the Mayser Center. The Diplomats (1-0) captured straight-game victories in all but one position to down the Dragons (0-1).
Guilherme de Melo defeated Ibrahim Bakir at the No. 1 position with scores of 11-7, 11-7, 11-6, Mauricio Sedano took down Justin Singh at No. 2 12-10, 11-5, 11-6, and Pedro Veiga de Almeida opened his career with an 11-7, 11-8, 11-6 triumph over Binura Jayasuriya at No. 3.
At No. 4, Ryan Mullaney cruised to an 11-3, 11-7, 11-7 victory over Mike Dolente, while Alex Arjoon (14-12, 11-5, 11-7) and Jack Cutler (11-8, 11-5, 11-5) won with relative ease at the No. 5 and No. 6 spots, respectively.
Dylan Cunningham posted an 11-9, 11-6, 11-3 win at No. 7 in his career-opening match, while Pat Cunningham shook off a first game loss to earn an 3-11, 11-9, 11-4, 11-3 win at No. 8, and Chris Bown tallied an 11-9, 12-10, 11-4 win at No. 9 to round out the shutout victory.
The Diplomats are back in action tomorrow with a showdown at defending national champion and No. 1 Princeton at 12:00 p.m.
