Diplomats Split Pair at Hampden-Sydney Tournament

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. - Franklin & Marshall split a pair of games on the final day of the Hampden-Sydney Tournament on Sunday, falling to Moravian, 7-1, before bouncing back to down Hampden-Sydney, 5-2. The Diplomats move to 2-1 on the year.

In the opening contest against Moravian (2-1), starting pitchers Brendan DeMond and Tommy Mariano each pitched six shutout innings, but the Greyhounds broke things open with seven runs over the next two frames to take a 7-0 advantage into the ninth. The Diplomats got on the board in the final inning off a one-out RBI double from Andrew Conlan that scored Connor Devlin from second, but Mariano then recorded the final two outs to finish off the complete game for Moravian.

DeMond (0-1) allowed just one hit and three baserunners over the first six innings. The junior tossed seven innings, striking out five, walking none and surrendering three runs on four hits. Mariano (1-0) also tallied five strikeouts while allowing nine hits and walking two.

Conlan went 3-for-4 with an RBI to lead F&M at the plate, while Aaron Gillette added a 2-for-4 performance from the leadoff spot.

Against Hampden-Sydney (4-5), Evan Lang held the Tigers to just one unearned run over six innings to earn the victory and Andrew Green was stellar in relief to close out the win for the Diplomats. Lang (1-0) allowed six hits with one stikeout and one walk, while Green nabbed the save by pitching the final three innings, keeping the Tigers to just one hit and one unearned run.

The Tigers jumped on top with a score in the top of the first, before F&M crossed the plate three times over the next two innings to take the lead for good. Josh Mendelson led off the second with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice by Brian Erb. Alex Vescera and Gillette followed with back-to-back RBI singles to give F&M a 2-1 edge.

In the third, Mendelson added an RBI of his own with a single that knocked in Will Benenson from third. Benenson touched home once more in the seventh off a sacrifice fly to center field by Avery Attinson to push the F&M lead to 4-1. Vescera notched the final F&M run with a homer in the eighth to give the Diplomats a three-run advantage. The Tigers pulled within 5-2 with a score in the eighth, but Green allowed only three batters to the plate in the bottom of the ninth to end the contest.

Mendelson went 3-for-4 with an RBI and score once, while Vescera was 2-for-4 at the plate with a homer, two RBIs and crossed home twice. Gillette notched two hits with an RBI and Kevin Shields also added two hits in the victory.

The Diplomats return to action with a doubleheader at Rowan on Saturday. Game one is set for 11:00 am.
