BALTIMORE, Md. - Evan Lang earned a complete-game victory in game two to help the Franklin & Marshall baseball team split its doubleheader at Johns Hopkins in Centennial Conference (CC) baseball action on Saturday. The Diplomats (13-10, 2-2 CC) fell 10-0 in game one, before bouncing back with a 7-1 triumph over the Blue Jays (12-8, 3-1 CC) in the nightcap.

In game one, Hopkins starter Tyler Goldstein (2-2) held the Diplomats to just three hits throughout seven innings to earn the win. The Blue Jays plated five runs over the first three frames to jump out to an early advantage, before tacking on five more in innings six through eight.

Brendan DeMond (0-4) suffered the loss on the mound for F&M. DeMond tossed 2.1 innings, while Chris Haylon (4.1 innings) and Chris Mathewson (1.0 inning) closed out the remainder of the contest.

In the nightcap, Lang (5-1) won his fourth straight outing with his first complete game of the year. The senior lefthander surrendered just one run on seven hits while strking out three. After a one-run first for the Blue Jays, Lang allowed just four hits and six baserunners over the next eight frames.

The Diplomats led from start to finish as they mixed effective small-ball with timely hitting to nab the doubleheader split. In the top of the first, Kevin Shields delivered the key hit with a two-RBI single up the middle. Will Benenson and J.T. Triantos stole second and third base, respectively, before Shields knocked both runners in to give F&M a 2-0 edge.

Jeff Lynch tallied an RBI single to left field in the bottom half of the first to pull JHU within 2-1, but the Blue Jays would get no closer the rest of the way.

In the top of the second, Alex Vescera pushed the F&M lead back to two with an RBI single to center that allowed Tyler Veterano to touch home.

F&M added on another score in the sixth, before breaking things open with a three-run seventh to take a 7-1 advantage. Shields and Josh Mendelson registered back-to-back two-out hits to push the Diplomats out to the six-run lead. Shields sent an RBI single up the middle to knock in his third run of the contest, while Mendelson blooped a two-RBI double that landed just inside the right field line.

Shields led the way in game two with a 2-for-5 performance at the plate with three RBIs and scored twice, while Mendelson went 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs. Aaron Gillette and Benenson also added two hits in the victory.

Mike Kanen and Ryan Zakszeski each tallied two RBIs in JHU's game one victory, while Kyle Neverman went 4-for-8 throughout the day and scored twice.

The Diplomats return to the diamond on Sunday for a non-conference matchup at Elizabethtown at 1:00 pm.
