F&M Drops Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Franklin & Marshall dropped both ends of a Centennial Conference (CC) baseball doubleheader at Swarthmore on Saturday. The Diplomats (16-21, 5-11 CC) fell 13-5 in the opener and 19-0 in game two.

The Diplomats out-hit the Garnet (21-13, 7-9 CC) 13-12 in game one, but were unable to overcome an early 7-0 deficit. F&M had its opportunities early on as it put a runner on third in each of the first three frames, but was unable to capitalize, leaving six runners stranded on the basepaths in the beginning stages of the contest.

Swarthmore plated one run in the first frame and two in the third, before notching four scores in the fourth, highlighted by a bases-clearing three-RBI triple from Nicko Burnett, to take a 7-0 edge.

F&M responded with four runs of its own in the top of the fifth to pull within 7-4. Will Benenson opened the scoring with a two-RBI double down the left field that scored J.T. Triantos and Alex Vescera. Brandon Theriault added an RBI single that allowed Benenson to touch home, and Blue Wells registered an RBI double to right center to score Theriault.

The Garnet went on to tally six total runs in innings six and seven to secure the 13-5 final.

Brendan DeMond (1-6) suffered the loss on the mound for the Diplomats, pitching 5.0 innings and allowing seven runs, six earned, with two strikeouts and two walks.

Adam Hardy (2-0) earned the win with 3.2 innings of work in relief for the Garnet. Hardy allowed two hits and struck out one.

Swarthmore carried its game one momentum into the second contest, tallying 20 hits en route to the shutout victory. The Garnet held a 6-0 edge after four innings, before exploding for 13 scores in the seventh to break things open.

Matt Valente (2-6) takes the loss for F&M, allowing five runs, three earned, on five hits while striking out two in 3.0 innings.

Kyle Crawford (6-0) remained unbeaten on the year in the win, striking out eight and surrendering just five hits in 8.0 innings.

Benenson led F&M with a 5-for-9 day at the plate with two RBIs and one run scored, while Triantos went 5-for-7 and scored twice.

Burnett paced Swarthmore, going 6-for-8 with six RBIs and seven runs scored throughout the twinbill. Tim Kwilos posted a 3-for-5 performance with four RBIs in the opener, while Zach Powell went 4-for-4 with six RBIs in the nightcap.

The Diplomats are back in action on Wednesday at Lehigh at 3:30 pm.
