Diplomats Take Down Cornell; Set Season Wins Record

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - No. 7 Franklin & Marshall concluded its season with a 5-4 triumph over No. 5 Cornell on Sunday in the consolation bracket of the College Squash Association (CSA) Team Championships Potter Cup (A Division). The Diplomats wrap up the year at 17-6, while the Big Red end the season at 16-6.

F&M's 17 wins marks the highest team win total in the history of the program, surpassing the 16-7 record of the 1996-97 squad. The Diplomats victory over Cornell also avenges the heartbreaking defeat in the home regular-season finale at the Mayser Center on Feb. 9, when the Big Red escaped with a 5-4 win.

Sunday's showdown was a hard-fought battle as three matches extended to five games, with the Diplomats coming out on top in each of those five-gamers. Nearly every spot in the lineup featured a tight matchup as four positions stretched to four games. No. 9 Dylan Cunningham posted the lone straight-game victory for F&M with an 11-2, 11-9, 11-9 triumph over Matthew Shang.

The Big Red controlled the middle of the lineup with wins at spots 3-6, but F&M came away with key wins at the top and bottom positions to claim the victory.

No. 1 Guilherme de Melo delivered a come-from-behind five-game victory over Nick Sachvie after facing a 2-0 hole. de Melo lost the opening two frames 9-11, 6-11, before responding with 11-6, 11-7, 11-7 scores to down Sachvie in five.

No. 2 Mauricio Sedano and No. 8 Brian Henry also went the distance in posting five-game triumphs. Sedano downed Arjun Gupta 12-10, 7-11, 11-1, 6-11, 11-9, while Henry topped Abhijt Malik 11-8, 10-12, 4-11, 11-6, 12-10.

No. 7 Jack Cutler defeated Graham Dietz in four, 12-10, 6-11, 11-5, 11-6.

Several Diplomats will return to action at the CSA Individual Championships on Friday at Trinity (Conn.).
