Cosgriff's Gem Gives Diplomats Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LAKE WALES, Fla. – Sean Cosgriff tossed a complete-game shutout to propel Franklin & Marshall to a 5-0 victory over Juniata in game two of Sunday's doubleheader, earning the Diplomats a split with the Eagles on day one of their spring break trip at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.

The Diplomats (2-3) dropped game one by a 4-2 count, before Cosgriff earned his second victory of the season with a three-hit, seven-inning blanking to give F&M the split. The sophomore lefthander notched five strikeouts and walked three in the win.

A strong start to game two lifted the Diplomats to victory as they tallied each of their five scores in the opening three frames, including a three-run top half of the first. Aaron Gillette got things rolling for F&M with a leadoff walk, and shortly thereafter stole second base. Alex Vescera followed with an RBI single through the left side of the infield, while Kevin Shields and Avery Attinson also registered RBI singles to give F&M a 3-0 advantage.

In the second inning, Vescera ripped a double down the left field line that scored Tyler Veterano from second to push F&M out to a four-run lead, before Matt Mezansky's sacrifice fly to right field in the third capped off the scoring for the Diplomats for the final 5-0 margin of victory.

In game one, F&M found itself in an early 4-0 hole as the Eagles (1-7) put together a four-hit, three-run top of the first and tacked on an additional score in the top of the third. Cole Walters' two-RBI single through the right side sparked the Eagles in the first, and Joe Sforza added to the lead with RBI singles in the first and third to push Juniata out to the four-run edge.

The Diplomats climbed back into the contest with some nifty base-running by Gillette and a pair of RBIs from Will Benenson in the third and fifth innings, respectively. Gillette opened the third and fifth frames in identical fashion by earning a walk and swiping second base, before eventually crossing home both times off the bat of Benenson.

F&M was not without its opportunities in the opener as it stranded six runners in scoring position throughout the contest.

The Diplomats return to action tomorrow with a doubleheader against Mount Union. Game one is slated for 9:30 a.m.
