Diplomats Drop Low-Scoring Battle

Box Score

HAVERFORD, Pa. - Franklin & Marshall fell 3-1 to Haverford in Centennial Conference (CC) baseball action on Friday afternoon. Despite the loss, the Diplomats (19-16, 10-6 CC) still control their own destiny for a CC playoff berth with two contests remaining, while the Fords (26-7, 11-5 CC) secured a playoff spot with the triumph.

F&M hosts Swarthmore tomorrow in a crucial CC doubleheader with a playoff spot on the line. After Swarthmore's 9-4 loss to Ursinus today, the Diplomats now sit one game ahead of the Garnet (9-7 CC) heading into tomorrow's showdown, and need one victory to lock up a spot in next week's CC Tournament.

Friday's contest was a low-scoring pitcher's duel as F&M's Sean Cosgriff (4-4) and Haverford's Tommy Bergjans (7-0) went at it, with both starters throwing the majority of the game. Bergjans limited the Diplomats to just six hits on the day in eight innings, while Cosgriff allowed only nine hits in 7 1/3 frames.

The Fords broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth on Matt Liscovitz's RBI single to center field. F&M tied things up at 1-1 in the sixth on Alex Vescera's RBI single through the left side of the infield that scored Aaron Gillette, but Casey Fox registered solo home runs in both the sixth and eighth frames to put the Fords up for good.

Kevin Goff earned his second save of the week and sixth of the season with a shutout ninth to close out the win for the Fords.

Kevin Shields tallied a pair of hits for F&M, while Vescera notched the Diplomats' lone RBI of the contest. Fox's two home runs led the way for the Fords, while Justin Coulter went 3-for-4 and Alex Hudak added two hits.

The Diplomats and Swarthmore will begin their doubleheader tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. at Caplan Field.
