F&M Soars Over Eagles in Season Opener

Box Score

LANCASTER, Pa. – Caroline Krohn scored four goals and handed out three assists to lead No. 5 Franklin & Marshall to a 19-13 victory over Brockport State Saturday afternoon in the season opener.

F&M (1-0) jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first five minutes of action with two scores from Krohn and one by Grace Saliba at 24:33. Kelly Wall finally put the Eagles (0-1) on the board a minute later, but the Diplomats rattled off four straight to go up 7-1 midway through the first. Emily Everdell did the heavy lifting in the run with three goals while Krohn tallied one as well.

The Eagles scored two in a three-minute span with Ali Kelly putting one through for the Diplomats in between Brockport's goals with the Diplomats leading 8-3. F&M closed out the half strong with three unanswered goals and took an 11-3 advantage into the break. Everdell got her fourth goal of the game to start things off with Anastasia Mergner and Brittney Jorgenson scoring the other two for the Diplomats.

Brockport struck first in the second before Ali Kelly answered to make it 12-4 just a little under two minutes into the final stanza. Ciara McKeon connected on a free position for the Eagles before Krohn picked up her fourth score and Jorgenson her second on free position shots to make it 14-5 at 23:24.

The Eagles responded by outscoring F&M 6-2 over the next 13 minutes of action to come within five, 17-12, with a little over three to play. F&M took some time off the clock and Jorgenson finished off a feed from Kelly to make it 18-12 at the one-minute mark. Wall picked up a quick score for the Eagles, but Jorgenson found Casey Madden seconds later for the final score of the game and a 19-13 F&M lead.

Kimberly Abruzzo and Natalie Delinsky also scored for the Diplomats while Mergner came away with 12 draws, picked up three ground balls and caused two turnovers.

Kelsey Hoffman finished with seven saves and went to 1-0 on the season while Remie Herr dropped to 0-1 with seven saves.

F&M returns to action next Saturday when the Diplomats host Washington & Lee at the St. Paul's School for Girls with a 1:00 p.m. start time.
