Washington Drops F&M

Box Score

LANCASTER, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall's baseball team fell to Washington by a 14-1 score on Friday afternoon at Caplan Field. The Centennial Conference (CC) loss dropped the Diplomats to 12-18, 4-8 CC on the season, while the Shoremen improved to 13-16, 4-8 CC.

Washington scored early and often, jumping out to a quick 3-0 lead off a two-RBI single and a sacrifice bunt RBI in the top of the first. Another run followed off a Bryan Baquer two-RBI triple to left field in the second before two more runs on a pair of hits in the third made it a 7-0 game.

In the fourth, the Shoremen put the contest out of reach by exploding for a six-run frame that included five singles and a double. David Iacobucci got F&M's only run in the game in the bottom of the inning by scoring Will Benenson, who tripled in the previous at bat, with an RBI grounder to the short stop.

Benenson and Pat Andrews registered the Diplomats only hits on the afternoon, with Benenson also drawing a walk in the contest.  Scott Matthews paced the Washington offense from the leadoff spot with a 4-for-6 performance to go along with three runs and three RBIs. Catcher Michael Acampora went 3-for-4 with two runs and a pair of RBIs. The Shoremen combined for 15 hits that included six doubles and a triple.

Starter Brandon Theriault (0-2) was dealt the loss after lasting just two innings and allowing six earned off seven hits. His counterpart Billy Griffin (2-1) earned the victory for Washington, tossing eight frames, allowing one earned and striking out seven.

F&M returns to action tomorrow when the Diplomats travel to take on Dickinson for a conference doubleheader that begins at 12:30 p.m.
