Box Score LANCASTER, Pa. – Elizabethtown used a 13-1 run in the second quarter to defeat Franklin & Marshall 76-57 in the Terry Greene Tip-Off Classic on Saturday afternoon. The Diplomats fell to 0-3 with the loss, while the Blue Jays improved to 3-1 with the victory.
The Elizabethtown run came after a Sarah Pisani layup brought the Diplomats within 10 at 19-9 with 7:40 left in the second quarter. Three straight three-pointers from the Blue Jays' Rachel Forjan spurred Elizabethtown, opening up a 22-point lead with 2:58 remaining in the half. However, a late response from F&M cut the lead to 36-19 at the break.
The Diplomats continued to hang tough in the third, cutting the Elizabethtown lead to 43-28 on a Devandria Bernard jumper with 4:54 left in the third. The teams traded baskets, and a late layup by Anajha Burnett sent F&M into the fourth down 15.
A quick run from the Blue Jays early in the fourth dampened any Diplomat hopes for a comeback, and a late burst of eight points in the final 1:47 was not enough for F&M as Elizabethtown came away with the win.
Freshman Lindsey Powers led the Diplomats in scoring, recording 18 points. Also reaching double figures was Erica Brown with 11, followed by Sarah Haddon with 9.
Haddon controlled the boards for the Diplomats, pulling in 13 rebounds while adding three blocks.
F&M returns to action tomorrow in the consolation game of the Terry Greene Tip-Off Classic, taking on Washington & Lee at 1:00 p.m.
The championship game, featuring Elizabethtown and Albright, is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
