CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The No. 14 Franklin & Marshall women's squash team dropped an 8-1 match to No. 15 Drexel on Saturday morning in the consolation semifinals of the Kurtz Cup (B Division) at the 2015 CSA Team Championships.
The Diplomats' record evened at 9-9 on the season, while the Dragons improved to 9-11. F&M was set to face off against No. 16 Bates tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. in the 15-16 seed playoff, however the teams mutually decided to cancel the contest due to the impending weather. Both squads will finish the season in a tie for the No. 15 ranking in the country.
Drexel advances into tomorrow's consolation final to face No. 13 Middlebury at 9:00 a.m.
F&M's lone win the contest came from Kate O'Brien at the No. 9 spot with a 3-0 sweep (11-7, 11-6, 11-6) of the Dragons' Kristine Giltvedt. Fiona Murphy fought at No. 2, evening the match at 1-1 after falling in the first frame and following with an 11-9 win in the second. However, her opponent captured wins of 11-7 and 11-8 in the final two games for the 3-1 victory.
Emily Caldwell (No. 4) could not respond to an exhausting 15-13 loss in her opening game as Drexel's Elisa Money wrapped up the sweep with a pair of 11-6 scores. Dulakshi Elikewela provided a valiant effort at the No. 6 position by taking a 2-1 lead, but falling in the final two frames for the heartbreaking 3-2 defeat (11-7, 10-12, 8-11, 11-9, 11-9).
A number of Diplomats will return to action at the CSA Individual Championships, which are hosted by Princeton and are set to run from Feb. 27-March 1.
