F&M Surges Past Gettysburg

Box Score

LANCASTER, Pa. – Four runs in the seventh inning put a one-score game out of reach as Franklin & Marshall's baseball team avenged a tough 13-inning loss a day before, with a 9-6 win against Gettysburg on Thursday afternoon. The Centennial Conference (CC) victory improved the Diplomats to 12-5, 2-2 CC, while the Bullets fell to 12-6, 1-1 CC.

The series evened at 1-1 on the year between the two conference rivals as Thursday's contest, with the squads combining for a total of 15 runs off 23 hits, proved to be a stark contrast to yesterday's 3-2 marathon.

Gettysburg took control early on when catcher Will Anderson stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and smacked a grand slam to left center for the 4-0 advantage in the second frame. Christopher Vincent helped F&M's offense respond in the fourth, sending a two-out single down the right field line, scoring Matt Mezansky from second and David Iacobucci from third to make it 4-2.

In the top of the sixth, the Diplomats secured their first led of the game with a three-run inning off three hits, including an RBI single from Brett Poniros and an Iacobucci RBI groundout to third, to take the one-run lead.

Following a one-two-three bottom of the sixth for Gettysburg's offense, F&M kept the momentum rolling with a two-RBI single down the right field line from Luke Seib, followed by RBI singles from Poniros and Iacobucci, to highlight a four-run frame.

Trailing by a 9-4 tally in the eighth, the Bullets pulled within three with a pair of runs off four hits. Gettysburg had runners on second and third with two outs and the tying run at the plate, however reliever Chris Mathewson forced a groundout to short to end the threat.

In the bottom of the ninth, Gettysburg looked for a late two-out rally, placing runners on first and third, however Diplomat pitcher Andrew Mascis managed a force out at short to close the contest for the first save of his career.

Mack Glavin (3-1) earned the win, allowing six earned off five hits in 7 1/3 innings, while striking out six. His counterpart Rich Power (2-1) was dealt the loss, allowing three earned off 10 hits in five innings.

Seib led the attack with a 3-for-4 showing at the plate, to go along with two runs scored and a pair of RBIs. Poniors, Iacobucci and Vincent each tallied two of F&M's 14 hits on the afternoon. Anderson paced the Bullets' offense, going 2-for-4 with four RBIs, tallying the second-inning home run and a triple in the contest.

Centennial Conference (CC) action continues on Saturday when the Diplomats host Johns Hopkins at Caplan Field for a double header beginning at 12:30 p.m.
