Tonelli, Diplomats Shutdown the Knights

Box Score

LANCASTER, Pa. – With its second shutout in as many games to open the 2015 season, the No. 12 Franklin & Marshall men's soccer team continued to impress, outplaying Arcadia with a 4-0 win on Friday evening at Tylus Field.

Day one of the Scrapyard Classic came to a close with the Diplomats holding a 2-0 record on the season, while the Knights fell to 0-1-1.

F&M's youth movement was on full display, with three of the four goals coming from underclassmen, including a pair from sophomore forward Jason Tonelli and freshman Ugo Okolie's first-career tally. The scoring onslaught was more than enough for goalkeeper Trevor Britton to move to 2-0 on the year as the senior net minder stopped all three shots he faced on the evening, while freshman Josh Gotlib saw his first collegiate action, playing the final 13 minutes.

The scoring was underway in the 41st minute when a long free kick from the right sideline was headed by Alex Bilodeau on net, deflected off the Arcadia 'keeper's hands for the initial stop, and put in net by Tonelli for his first of the season.

Heading out of the halftime with a slight 1-0 lead, the Diplomats needed just 13 minutes to add on, as Okolie sped down the left side and lofted a well-placed pass to Chase TenBrook in the box, who landed a header into the back of the net for the two-goal advantage.

Okolie struck for a goal of his own in the 72nd minute, using some slick footwork to split a pair of defenders at the top of the box, before dropping off a low shot to the bottom right corner of the goal, pulling F&M ahead 3-0. Tonelli capped off the scoring with three minutes to go in the game, taking a drop pass from Conor Pellas and lobbing a shot into the right of the net.

The Diplomats thoroughly handled action on the offensive side of the ball, outshooting the Knights by a 19-4 margin, including a 9-1 tally in the second half. Pellas, TenBrook and Tonelli each recorded three shots, while Paul McWhirter added a pair.

The 2015 Scrapyard Classic concludes tomorrow when F&M faces off against Alvernia at 6:00 p.m.
