Box Score LANCASTER, Pa. – A Devon Malfitano penalty kick goal in the opening minutes of overtime lifted the No. 12 Franklin & Marshall men's soccer team to a 1-0 OT win against Alvernia on Saturday evening at Tylus Field. The victory crowned the Diplomats as the 2015 Scrapyard Tournament Champions, as F&M registered a 2-0 record on the weekend to improve to 3-0 on the year, while the Crusaders fell to 1-1-1.
Just two minutes into the overtime stanza, Jason Tonelli beat his defender on the right side of the field and stormed down the byline toward the net, before being taken out with a slide tackle that was called a foul in the box, setting up the penalty kick opportunity.
Malfitano lined up for the attempt and chose the bottom left corner of the net for his target. The Crusaders' goalkeeper dove in the direction of the shot and got a hand on the ball, but was unable to come up with the stop.
For his effort over the course two games, Tonelli was named Tournament MVP, Ugo Okolie, Chase TenBrook and Janse Schermerhorn were each named to the All-Tournament team.
The physical, hard-fought contest did not allow many quality scoring chances for either side. F&M's defense continued its dominant play, putting together the team's third straight shutout to open the season. Trevor Britton (3-0) rose to the challenge in net, registering his second shutout of 2015, after stopping both shots he faced. Zach Rider (1-1-1) was dealt the hard-luck loss for Alvernia with three saves on the evening.
F&M led in shots by a 16-2 margin and corners at 4-0. Malfitano paced the offense with four shots, followed by Connor Finn with three, and Conor Pellas, TenBrook, and Okolie with a pair apiece.
Action continues for the Diplomats on Friday when F&M welcomes Houghton to Tylus Field for a 6:00 p.m. matchup.
