Relay Win Clinches Dramatic Victory Over McDaniel

WESTMINSTER, Md. – The team of Ryan Caffrey, Keith Kamons, David Burton, and Daniel Sanders pulled out a victory in the final event of the night to clinch a 49-37 victory of McDaniel on Friday night in Centennial Conference (CC) men's swimming. The win took the Diplomats to 2-3, 1-2 CC while the Green Terror fell to 1-7, 0-5 CC with the loss.

Up 42-37 heading into the final event of the night, F&M needed a victory in the 200-yard freestyle relay, or seven points would allow McDaniel to nab the victory. However, the team of Caffrey, Kamons, Burton, and Sanders finished in 1:29.79 to win by more than two seconds, clinching the meet for the Diplomats.

Sanders and Kamons were helpful in setting up the dramatic finish, finishing 1-2 in the 50-yard freestyle. Sanders took first with a time of 22.50 while Kamons posted a time of 22.72 to take second.

Richard Perry also turned in a pair of strong performances for the Diplomats, beginning in the 200-yard freestyle where his time of 1:50.52 was good for first place. Joining him in the points was Matthew Murphy, whose time of 2:00.55 placed him third. Perry rounded out his evening in the 100-yard butterfly, taking second after finishing in 53.92.

Senior Patrick Greaney reached the podium twice as well, joining forces with fellow captain Jordan Alter to fill the top two spots in the 500-yard freestyle. Alter finished as runner-up with a time of 5:10.79, while Greaney took the victory in 5:04.75. Greaney added a third-place finish in the 400-yard IM, claiming a point with a time of 4:27.20.

Caffrey earned individual silver in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 49.44, while Eric Lang recorded a pair of second-place finishes in the 400-yard IM (4:23.19) and 100-yard breaststroke (1:02.30). Timothy Gould added a second place of his own in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 56.10.

Murphy, Sanders, Jack Currie, and Cody Kalinowski all tallied third-place finishes to power the Diplomats to victory.

F&M returns to the pool tomorrow at 1:00 as Dickinson visits Lancaster for another CC matchup.
