Maze Plays Hero in OT Win Over No. 13 Haverford

Box Score

LANCASTER, Pa. – Robert Maze's 94th-minute tally gave the No. 3 Franklin & Marshall men's soccer team a dramatic 1-0 OT win against No. 13 Haverford on Saturday afternoon in Centennial Conference (CC) competition.

The Diplomats now stand alone in first place in the conference, improving to 11-1-3, 6-0-1 CC with the win while the Fords fell to 9-3-3, 6-1 CC with the loss.

Before the game, F&M honored its five-member senior class of Jeremy Levine, Conor Pellas, Matt Regueiro, Dave Reingold and Ben Wild

Haverford entered the matchup with outright wins in its last 15 conference games and was unbeaten in 17 straight.

All of the changed in the opening minutes of overtime when a long thrown from Ben Draheim reached the box and caused chaos. Wyatt Fabian eventually got a foot on the ball and sent a short cross to Maze who slid the ball into the middle of the net for dramatic game-winner.

Despite the outcome, it was Haverford who stormed out of the gates in the opening half. However, it was the Diplomats took back control of the action in the closing minutes of the frame and entered the break with a 4-3 edge on shots.

Scoring chances were dominated by F&M in the second stanza and the Diplomats nearly ended the game with 2:56 to go in regulation when a Ben Draheim strike to the far post from 20 yards out forced a diving stop from Haverford's goalkeeper. The ball smacked off of the 'keeper's hands and appeared to trickle into the net, but he managed to recover in time to make the play.

Reingold (11-1-3) was stellar in net for the Diplomats, registering four saves for his sixth shutout of the season. Sam Miller (7-3-1) was impressive in the losing effort with seven stops.

Overall, shots belonged to F&M at 14-8, as well as corners at 4-1. Alex Bilodeau and Jason Tonelli both notched four shots, while a trio of Diplomats followed with two each.

F&M is now in the driver's seat of the CC standings entering the final week of the regular season and returns to play on Wednesday by hosting Gettysburg at 4:00 p.m.
