Diplomats Fall at Susquehanna

Box Score

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall fell 20-10 to Susquehanna in Centennial Conference (CC) football action Saturday afternoon at Alonzo Stagg Field. The Diplomats dropped to 6-2, 5-2 CC while the River Hawks improved to 4-4, 3-4 CC.

Susquehanna went on the board first when Torey Brown dove in from a yard out to complete a 12-play, 82-yard drive for the River Hawks.  F&M answered on its next series with a 13-play drive.

Dave Shellhammer picked up a crucial fourth-and-two to keep the drive going, before Cody Hubbs hit a 23-yard field goal to make it 7-3 at 14:46 in the second quarter. Both teams put together sustained drives, but neither were able to capitalize with Susquehanna holding onto a 7-3 edge at the break.

The River Hawks went up 14-3 early in the third after converting an F&M turnover into a touchdown just under three minutes into the third. F&M countered on its next possession to come within four, 14-10.

F&M marched 52 yards in 12 plays and Taalib Gerald rushed in from eight out for the score. Billy Zwicharowski's kick after was good. After a three-and-out by both teams, Susquehanna made it a two score game with a touchdown early in the fourth to take a decisive 20-10 lead.

Two interceptions in the fourth quarter proved too costly as the Diplomats were unable to put points on the board the remainder of the game.

Bradley completed 24-of-38 passes for 219 yards and four interceptions with Andrew DeStefano leading the way with a team-high 58 receiving yards on four grabs. Bobby Keyes hauled in nine balls for 55 yards and Joshua Young ended the day with 34 yards on four receptions.

Gerald picked up 61 yards on the ground on 13 carries with one score and added another 36 reception yards. Shellhammer rushed 14 times for 36 yards.

Hubbs averaged 60.3 yards on kickoffs, connected on one field goal and an extra point and punted four times with a 38.8 per punt average.

Joe Granahan led the defense with seven stops (3s) with one sack while Brendan Daly recorded six tackles with a forced fumble. Ben Okun tallied five tackles and Luke Foukas along with Jon Naji both ended with five stops. Foukas had two tackles for a loss, including a sack and Naji picked up a sack as did Steve Elf.

F&M returns to action next Saturday when the Diplomats host No. 7 Johns Hopkins at 12:00 noon.
